Pat Flanagan may have dominated the headlines last week after being appointed as interim Westmeath manager, but this week it’s a different Flanagan that will be on the minds of the football fraternity of Westmeath as the race for this year’s Flanagan Cup gets under way in earnest. Maryland and Kinnegad kicked off this year’s action in Moate last Sunday but the remaining five games are down for decision this weekend. The intermediate championship also kicks off this weekend.

D- day for U21 footballers

This Easter weekend is of pivotal importance in the young football careers of the U21s from both Westmeath and Roscommon. Both counties will contest their respective provincial finals at a time when football in each county is crying out for a lift. To win on Sunday would further enhance the growing reputation already being forged by quite a few representatives of each side and offer hope of better days to come at senior level in the future.

Major battle in store for minor footballers

Westmeath’s minor footballers face a major battle this weekend as they face Meath in the Leinster minor football quarter-final. Ger Heavin’s young charges face the added difficulty of having to travel to the lions’ den to take on the reigning provincial champions. Having easily accounted for Carlow in the opening round this will be a much sterner test.

With the Westmeath senior club championship now having reached the knockout stages we are in for some serious action this weekend. Garrycastle and Corralstown/Kinnegad are both already safely through to the semi-finals. Their opposition in the semis will be decided over the course of this weekend. Maryland face a challenging outing against Tyrrellspass in Lakepoint Park on Saturday at 7.15pm while Mullingar Shamrocks and St Loman’s go head to head in a must-see tie in Cusack Park on Sunday at 6.15pm.
